DAGUPAN CITY – Thirty housing units were turned over to informal settler families, as part of the local government’s socialized housing program.

Mayor Belen Fernandez handed over to each family-beneficiary a memorandum of agreement formalizing their use of the housing unit as their residence in a ceremony last January 27.

The families were originally from Sitio Maisan in Barangay Poblacion Oeste, who have been squatting in a private property for decades.

Mayor Belen Fernandez said that the move is part of the administration’s continuing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of these families.

The local government provided each housing unit its own electrical and water connection. A parcel of land was also allocated for residents to grow their own vegetables.

Fernandez added that she also plans on putting up a day care center in Sitio Korea, to provide the small community’s children an early education.

“Shelter is one of the basic human necessities, and the government is ready to give those who don’t have their own homes a place to live,” said Fernandez.

Residents expressed their gratitude to the local government for providing them with their own homes.

Larry Uson, who lives with his wife and three children, said that having their own house has improved their lives, giving them a stable and safe haven.

“We are happy that my family has a new house. After so many years, we didn’t have place that we can say is ours. And now Mayor Belen gave us this unit that will serve as our home for years to come,” said Uson. (CIO/Patrick Cendreda)
