Great Writer Dies

Alexander Meneses Dacanay passed away at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) on November 20, after lingering illness brought about by complications of blood, gastro-intestinal, hepatic, and kidney problems. He was 71.

He was a journalist, book writer and editor after he retired as English teacher at the University of the Philippines in Angeles, Pampanga in 2011. Previously, he wrote opinion pieces for Gulf News (of the United Arab Emirates). He was Manila's journalist of the US-based TV network CBS and Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Japanese business paper) - from the 80s to the 90s. He was associate editor of WHO magazine, a newsweekly then owned by Hans Menzi of Manila Bulletin, which criticized the socio-political condition of martial law; and staff writer of Panorama, Bulletin's Sunday magazine, both in the 80s. He was announcer-newscaster of the now defunct DZMT; and announcer-reporter of the Bureau of Broadcast, a government agency in the 70s.

He finished AB English at the University of the Philippines. He was salutatorian of the 1957 elementary class of Ateneo de Davao (a batch mate of President Rodrigo Duterte); and high school graduate of Ateneo in 1961. He was baso profundo of the UP Concert Chorus and the UP Madrigal Singers; and a student of Jovita Fuentes (an international soprano who portrayed Cio-cio-san in Giacomo Puccini's Madame Butterfly at Italy's Teatro Municipale di Piacenza), in the 70s.

He is survived by his wife, journalist Barbara Mae Dacanay; children Nadine, Nikos, Camille, and Nicole; sons-in law Graziano Fiorillo and Hadrian Mendoza; grandchildren Banaue Marie and Roja Mendoza. and Daniele Fiorillo; and 13 nieces and nephews by four brothers, three sisters and their espouses.

Wake is at the National City United Church (NCUC) on 96 Times Street West Triangle Homes, Quezon City starting 21 November. Interment is at Marikina's Loyola Memorial Park on 25 November.
